Background of the study

Digital communication patterns in Nigeria have undergone significant transformation with the proliferation of social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. These platforms offer distinct environments for communication—Facebook provides a public, forum like setting for extended discourse, whereas WhatsApp fosters private, real time conversations among closely knit groups. In both contexts, users demonstrate unique communication styles that reflect varying degrees of formality, creativity, and cultural influence (Ibrahim, 2023). This comparative study examines the linguistic, pragmatic, and interactive patterns present in Nigerian Facebook posts and WhatsApp messages. It aims to identify how factors like group size, audience, and platform design influence language use. Digital communication on these platforms has not only reshaped traditional language norms but has also given rise to new expressions and interaction strategies that reveal the evolving nature of Nigerian discourse (Obi, 2024). By analyzing textual data from both environments, the study will contribute to a deeper understanding of digital communication trends and provide practical insights for educators and policymakers adapting to these changes (Emeka, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the evident differences in communication styles on Facebook and WhatsApp, there is limited research comparing these patterns within the Nigerian context. Current studies often address digital communication in a generalized manner, neglecting the influence of platform-specific features on language use. This gap hinders the development of tailored strategies to address the diverse communicative needs in digital environments, leaving educators and policymakers without clear guidance on managing evolving language practices (Chinwe, 2023). Without a comprehensive comparative analysis, the nuances of how audience and context shape digital discourse remain poorly understood (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze communication patterns on Nigerian Facebook and WhatsApp.

2. To compare how platform-specific features affect language use.

3. To provide recommendations for integrating digital communication trends into educational practice.

Research questions

1. What are the distinctive communication patterns on Facebook versus WhatsApp?

2. How do platform features influence these patterns?

3. What implications do these differences have for digital language evolution?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of digital communication patterns in Nigerian social media, focusing on Facebook and WhatsApp. The findings will inform sociolinguistic theory and practical strategies for educators and policymakers to adapt to evolving online discourse trends (Ibrahim, 2023; Obi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing communication patterns on Facebook and WhatsApp among Nigerian users, excluding other platforms and offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

• Digital Communication Patterns: The recurring linguistic and interactional practices observed in online discourse.

• Comparative Study: An analysis that contrasts language use across different platforms.

• Social Media Discourse: Communication occurring on digital platforms.
